# Recommended Tenant Settings

> The Power BI tenant settings Entegrata recommends for firms running Entegrata reports

## Overview

These are the Power BI tenant settings Entegrata recommends for firms running Entegrata reports.

<Info>
  No tenant settings are required to install Entegrata Power BI reports. The one setting marked **Required** below is needed only to use Excel. Unless your firm has a business or technical reason to differ, Entegrata recommends the settings below.
</Info>

## Prerequisites

You need Power BI administrator access. To open the admin portal, see [Microsoft Learn: What is the admin portal?](https://learn.microsoft.com/fabric/admin/admin-center)

## Tenant Settings

For what each setting does, see [Microsoft Learn: About tenant settings](https://learn.microsoft.com/fabric/admin/about-tenant-settings).

### Workspace Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Create workspaces | Enabled for specific users | Keeps workspaces from multiplying without an owner. Let a small group of people create them for the firm. |
| Use semantic models across workspaces | Enabled for all users | Lets report builders reuse the Entegrata semantic model from their own workspace instead of copying it. See [Build Custom Reports](/power-bi/build-custom-reports). |

### Information Protection

Skip this section if your firm does not license Microsoft Purview Information Protection. An error mentioning Microsoft Purview when you change these settings means it is not licensed.

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Allow users to apply sensitivity labels for content | Enabled for all users | Lets people mark reports and files with the firm's confidentiality labels. |
| Apply sensitivity labels from data sources to their data in Power BI | Enabled for all users | Carries labels from the source data into Power BI, so confidential data stays marked. |
| Automatically apply sensitivity labels to downstream content | Enabled for all users | Passes a label on to reports, exports and copies built from labeled content. |
| Allow workspace admins to override automatically applied sensitivity labels | Enabled | Lets a workspace admin correct a label that was applied automatically but is wrong. |

### Export and Sharing Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Users can see guest users in lists of suggested people | Enabled for all users | If you already have guest users, people can find them when sharing, instead of mistyping addresses. |
| Users can work with semantic models in Excel using a live connection | Enabled for all users | Required to analyze Entegrata data in Excel. See [Connect Excel](/power-bi/connect-excel). |
| Certification | Enabled for specific groups | Lets a trusted group mark reports and models as certified, so people know which ones to rely on. |
| Users can set up email subscriptions | Enabled for all users | Lets people receive reports by email on a schedule, instead of exporting and forwarding them. |
| Install Power BI app for Microsoft Teams automatically | Enabled for all users | Puts Power BI where people already work, so reports are easy to find and share in Teams. |
| Enable Power BI add-in for PowerPoint | Enabled for all users | Lets people present live report pages in PowerPoint instead of pasting screenshots that go out of date. |

### Power BI Visuals

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Allow visuals created using the Power BI SDK | Enabled for all users | Allows custom visuals, which some Entegrata reports use. The next setting limits them to certified ones. |
| Add and use certified visuals only (block uncertified) | Enabled for all users | Limits custom visuals to ones Microsoft has certified, which are checked for safe data handling. Entegrata reports use only certified custom visuals, so this does not affect them. |

### Audit and Usage Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Usage metrics for content creators | Enabled for all users | Shows report owners how often their reports are used. |
| Per-user data in usage metrics for content creators | Enabled for all users | Shows which people use a report, so owners can plan training and retire unused reports. |

### Dashboard Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Web content on dashboard tiles | Enabled for specific groups | Web content tiles can show outside web pages on a dashboard. Limit them to people you trust. |

### Developer Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Service principals can call Fabric public APIs | Enabled for specific groups | Lets approved automation, such as deployment or refresh tools, work with Power BI without a named user. Limit it to specific security groups. |

### Template App Settings

| Setting | Recommended | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Install template apps | Enabled for specific groups | Template apps come from third parties. Limit who can install them. |
| Install template apps not listed in AppSource | Enabled for specific groups | Apps outside AppSource have not been through Microsoft's review. Limit who can install them. |

## Power BI Desktop Preview Features

Turn these on for each person who deploys Entegrata reports from their own computer. In Power BI Desktop, go to **File**, **Options and settings**, **Options**, then **Preview features**.

| Preview feature | Why |
| - | - |
| Enhanced DAX Time Intelligence | Entegrata semantic models use it for date calculations. |
| Store semantic model using TMDL format | Entegrata semantic models are stored in this format. Turn it on if it appears in your version of Power BI Desktop. |

Without these, Power BI Desktop may not open or deploy Entegrata reports correctly.

<Note>
  Power BI Projects, the enhanced report format (PBIR), and DAX user-defined functions are generally available, so they no longer need a preview feature. Keep Power BI Desktop up to date to have them.
</Note>

## Workspaces

No specific workspace settings are required. Entegrata reports can be published to Pro, Premium Per User, or Fabric capacity workspaces. For long-term use, Entegrata recommends Fabric capacity. See [Licensing Patterns](/power-bi/licensing).

## Stay on the Current Power BI Release

Entegrata always develops against the latest monthly Power BI release. To avoid version mismatches, Entegrata strongly recommends keeping your firm on the current release rather than a delayed release schedule.
